farktography dot net is a separate site from fark dot com. the contests run on Fark on wednesday night starting at 8:00 EST. to enter at that time you must have a TotalFark account.

TotalFark is a premium section of Fark and requires a paid account. the subscription runs $5.00 a month and there is info here http://cgi.fark.com/cgi/fark/totalfarksignup.pl

after the contest has been on TotalFark for a few hours it goes to the main page of Fark where everyone can see it. at that time, if you have a Fark account (either regular Fark, the free account, or TotalFark) then you can vote and /or post an entry of your own. while the contest time is consistent on TotalFark it will vary on Fark but usually is around midnight.

to post an entry you need to have the image hosted somewhere on the web. the image should be around 50-70kb and not bigger than 700 pixel wide and 1200 tall. images larger than 200kb will be rejected and wider than 700 pixels will be resized.

ok so far? now go to the bottom of the contest and find the comment box. enter your user name and password. in the comments box enter and enable voting. click “preview” or “add comment”. personally i preview then post. if all goes well your entry is there for us to vote on.

BTW Fark has this really neat feature – the scratch pad where you can test your posting. http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comments.pl?IDLink=69

    hope this helps.

i’m thinking you mean distinct folks who enter since the members here now is 327.

    how about a t-shirt with a UFO?
    or a streetlight?

i’m sure you’ve seen the “photographers do it in the dark” ones.

when i worked at the Darkroom (TM) in Austin the t-shirts had a semi face peering out of a folded back corner of the photo paper. if i remain semi interested i’ll find the shirt and post a picture.

    how about
    C:DOS
    C: DOS RUN
    RUN DOS RUN

    man i crack me up.

no alcohol was involved in the above post. just silly tonight.

you are absolutely correct mikemikeb my bad. i didn’t remember using it before and since i used a different program (and a different name) to save it before uploading it didn’t get a “file overwrite” thing. i’ll have to start checking my old “convert” folder when pulling from my archives.

but in my defense i was also busy trying to get linux running on two of my computers last night.

    not a geek either.

/and since i’m both really proud and happy (and a bit of an AW) let me say that i now have TWO dual boot boxes.

i too use a card reader. first it downloads faster than from the camera. make that cameras, of the three i’ve got the software installed for none are particularly quick. secondly depending on the software you get different file names and organization. with the reader it is consistent.

by file name i mean that the fuji image file is like this YYYY_MMDDimagegoup0001.jpg which may be handy if you’re looking for pictures based on date but a pain otherwise. if you use a different naming scheme based on, say subject, then you have to rename each photo. i have enough problems with pictures of the dog in amongst the “flower001.jpg” etc photos from a series of shots primarily of flowers. and once i’ve moved them the “dog” folder will end up having “flower022.jpg” etc in it.

    YMMV

prair be sure you have the proper cleaning tools. read the link i provided BEFORE doing anything. it is possible to damage the sensor if you aren’t very careful.

that said you made a good choice not getting the extended warranty.

and good luck with your cleaning. i would recommend shooting some shots of the sky or a white background or something similar that will let you see just where and how bad any dust spots are. they will show up as black spots. or perhaps just faint light gray spots. it may be that any dust you have (or get) is not noticeable in your normal pictures. i got mine clean to the point that the remaining spots aren’t seen 95% of the time. and even when they show up it takes someone with a semi trained eye to see them.

for about 6 weeks in early 1967 i dated a woman who lived there. it was an interesting experience in many ways.

that was roughly a year after getting to spend some time with folks from south central LA.

all in all life enriching times.

i did do the brush once but need to get a better one of those also. the one that came with the camera left bristles behind the blower barely got off. i had two or three really noticeable dust spots when i first started using the camera. by cleaning twice i’ve been able to make those two almost not noticeable spots. the spots are both smaller now and in an area off the center of the frame.

there isn’t a camera store here in town anymore and i haven’t made the trip to the next town west that has one.

my konica/minolta maxxun 7D has instructions in the manual about cleaning the sensor and a special setting that will lock the mirror up. they recommend the bulb blower and provide one. it kinda pissy. a better blower is in the works.

here is an article on cleaning http://www.peakoverload.com/blog/photography/sensor-cleaning.html that includes the “rocket” blower Elsinore mentioned. i’ve done it a couple of times without messing anything up. YMMV

    good luck.

and personally i stay away from ALL extended warranties. but that’s me. again YMMV

yeah, she right. not immediately but at sometime in the future. and besides later you can say you were there when the first black president made his official “i”m running” announcement.

to bad it’s not colin powell but his time has past.

Some might even call them “tasteless snapshots”…

can’t speak for you but i got lazy there for a while, especially with digital, and my eye went south. it was just too easy to fill the card and use something from it later. i’m trying to get back into actually thinking before i squeeze the trigger. maybe that’s the wrong shooting analogy. visualize the image before pushing the shutter.

oh BTW don’t keep harping on “critically sharp” if you want your friends to go on talking to you about their photos. or yours.

    film is a harsh mistress

thanks millera9 they were taken Oct 1st across the street. was out shooting flowers and there they were. there are 112 frames in that set. so that’s like 2 divided by 112 = ? percent. whatever it’s about par for the good from taken ratio.

but i’m sure you know all about that because your shots show the same enjoyment of photography. and a better eye than i have now.
